This is a Wayne Gretzky goal scored puck. The goal was the New York Rangers' fifth of the game in a 5-2 win over the Hartford Whalers at Madison Square Garden in New York City on December 16, 1996. It was Gretzky's 14th goal of the season and 851st of his career record 894. It was also his 45th point of the season and 2653rd of his career record 2857. The goal was scored on Sean Burke and was assisted by Niklas Sundstrom and Jeff Beukeboom. It was Wayne's second point of the game, giving him the NHL league lead in scoring at the time. This was Wayne's first year in New York and statistically his best season as a Ranger finishing 4th in the NHL with 97 points and tied for first in assists with Mario Lemieux at 72. The puck originated with Mike Folga, the Rangers equipment manager at the time, and has a copy of the hand written and signed COA that he provided for a pair of goal pucks to Leland's auction house back in 2001 when he originally sold this puck.
